What is Alfalipoic and what it is used for
Alfalipoic contains the active substance thioctic (alpha-lipoic) acid, which is in the group of products that affect the digestive system and metabolism.
Thioctic acid is produced in the body, influencing the favorable degradation of sugar in diabetic patients. Thioctic acid also has antioxidant properties that protect nerve cells from reaction with degradation products.
Your doctor has prescribed Alfalipoic for the treatment of sensory disorders of diabetic polyneuropathy (sensory nerve damage that is caused by diabetes).

2. What you need to know before you take Alfalipoic
Do not take Alfalipoic
If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to thioctic acid or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
Warnings and precautionsAlfalipoic
Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before taking
Always follow the instructions given to you by your doctor.

Take special care with Alfalipoic
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor, pharmacist or nurse if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
Tell your doctor if you know you have an intolerance to some sugars.
If you are not sure if any of the above conditions or symptoms apply to you, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice before starting to use Alfalipoic

Children and adolescents (under 18 years)
Children and adolescents should not be treated with Alfalfaic due to a lack of clinical experience in this age group.

Other Drugs and Alfalipoic
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.
This is because Alphalipoque may prolong the effects of some medicines, and other medicines may affect the effect of Alfalfaep.
It is possible that Alfalpic may cause a decrease in the effect of cisplatin (anticancer agent) when used concomitantly.
Do not take Alphalipoque at the same time as metal compounds (eg iron, magnesium, dairy products because of the calcium content), as it may neutralize their effects. If Alfalipoic is taken 30 minutes before breakfast, iron and magnesium preparations can be taken at noon or afternoon.
The blood glucose lowering effect of antidiabetic medicinal products (insulin and other medicinal products for the treatment of diabetes) may be enhanced. Therefore, more frequent blood glucose control is recommended, especially at the beginning of treatment with Alfalfaep. To avoid the symptoms of hypoglycaemia, in some cases a dose reduction of the insulin dose or the dose of oral antidiabetic products may be required on medical advice.

Alfalipoic with food, drinks and alcohol
Regular use of alcohol is a significant risk factor for the development and progression of nerve damage and may lead to a reduction in the success of Alfalfaic therapy. Therefore, it is advisable for patients with diabetic polyneuropathy to avoid alcohol. This also applies to the time when no therapy is taking place.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
As there is no information available for this period in this patient group, treatment with Alfalfliod can only be performed after careful consideration and observation by the treating physician.
Animal studies did not show reproductive or fetal impairment.
There is no data on the passage of the medicinal product into breast milk.

Driving and using machines
Alfalfaep does not affect the ability to drive or use machines.

Alfalipoic contains lactose monohydrate
This medicinal product contains lactose monohydrate. If you are known to be intolerant to some sugars, please tell your doctor before taking this medicine.

3. How to take Alfalipoic
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Dosage
The daily dose is one film-coated tablet corresponding to 600 mg of thioctic acid taken as a single dose approximately 30 minutes before the first meal of the day. Alfalfliox is intended for long-term treatment.

How to take Alfalipoic  tablets
You should swallow the Alfalipoic tablets with a sufficient amount of liquid. The prescribed dose should be taken on an empty stomach as concomitant food intake can prevent absorption. Therefore, it is recommended that the entire daily dose be taken at once before breakfast, especially for patients with prolonged stomach emptying time.

Duration of treatment
If you stop taking ALFALIPOIC
Do not stop taking ALFALIPOIC without discussing it with your doctor as your symptoms may recur or become worse. The course of treatment prescribed by your doctor should be completed in order not to impair its efficacy.

If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor, pharmacist or nurse.
