What is Euthyrox and what it is used for

Levothyroxine, the active substance in Euthyrox, is a synthetic thyroid hormone used to treat thyroid disease and dysfunction. It has the same effect as naturally occurring thyroid hormones.

Euthyrox is used
- for the treatment of benign goiter in patients with normal thyroid function, for the prevention of recurrence after goiter surgery,
- to replace natural thyroid hormones with reduced production of hormones by your thyroid gland,
- to suppress tumor growth in patients with thyroid cancer.

Euthyrox 25 micrograms, 50 micrograms, 75 micrograms and 100 micrograms are also used to balance thyroid hormone levels when hormone overproduction is treated with antithyroid drugs.

Euthyrox 100 micrograms can also be used to test your thyroid function.

2. What you need to know before you take Euthyrox

Do not take Euthyrox
if you have:
- allergy (hypersensitivity) to the active substance or to any of the other ingredients of Euthyrox (listed in section 6),
- untreated dysfunction of the adrenal gland, pituitary gland or excessive overproduction of thyroid hormones (thyrotoxicosis),
- acute heart disease (myocardial infarction or inflammation of the heart).

If you are pregnant, do not take Euthyrox with antithyroid medicines (see section "Pregnancy and breast-feeding" below).

Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Euthyrox if you have any of the following heart conditions:
- insufficient blood flow in the blood vessels of the heart (angina pectoris),
- heart failure,
- fast and irregular heartbeat,
- high blood pressure,
- fatty deposits in the arteries (atherosclerosis).

They should be controlled with medication before you start taking Euthyrox or before a suppressive thyroid test. While you are on Euthyrox, your thyroid hormone levels should be checked frequently. If you are not sure if you have any of these conditions or if you are not receiving treatment, contact your doctor.

Your doctor will test you if you have adrenal or pituitary dysfunction, or thyroid dysfunction with uncontrolled overproduction of thyroid hormones (thyroid autonomy), as these must be medically controlled before you start taking eu or examination of the thyroid gland.

Talk to your doctor,
- if you are menopausal or post-menopausal; Your doctor may need to check your thyroid function regularly because of the risk of osteoporosis.
- if you switch from one levothyroxine-containing medicine to another. The effect may be slightly different and you may need more frequent testing and dose adjustment.
- before taking orlistat (used to treat obesity; you may need to be monitored more often and your dose adjusted)
- if you have symptoms of mental disorders (you may need to be monitored more often and your dose may need to be adjusted).

Other medicines and Euthyrox
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any of the following medicines, as Euthyrox may affect their effect:

- Antidiabetic medicines (medicines that lower blood sugar):
Euthyrox may reduce the effect of your antidiabetic medicine, so you may need further tests on your blood sugar levels, especially at the beginning of treatment with Euthyrox. The dose of your antidiabetic medicine may need to be adjusted while you are taking Euthyrox.

- Coumarin derivatives (medicines used to prevent blood clotting): Euthyrox may increase the effect of these medicines, which may increase the risk of bleeding, especially in the elderly. Regular monitoring of coagulation parameters may be required at the beginning and during treatment with Euthyrox. The dose of coumarin may need to be adjusted while you are taking Euthyrox.

Make sure you follow the recommended dosing intervals if you need to take the following medicines:
- Medicines that bind to bile acids and lower high cholesterol (such as cholestyramine or cholestipol):
Make sure you take Euthyrox 4-5 hours before these medicines, as they may block the absorption of Euthyrox from the gut.
- Antacids (to relieve stomach acid), sucralfate (for stomach or intestinal ulcers), other aluminum-containing medicines, iron-containing medicines, calcium-containing medicines:
Make sure you take Euthyrox at least 2 hours before these medicines, as otherwise they may reduce the effect of Euthyrox.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any of the following medicines, as they may reduce the effect of E.
Duration of treatment
The duration of treatment may vary, depending on the condition for which you are using Euthyrox. Therefore, your doctor will discuss with you how long you should take it. Most patients take Euthyrox for life.

If you take more Euthyrox than you should

Isolated cases of seizures may occur in patients with nervous system disorders, eg epilepsy. Symptoms of acute psychosis may occur in patients at risk of mental disorders. If this happens, call your doctor.
