L-Tryptophan (TRP) is one of the 20 amino acids encoded directly by the human genome. In addition to acting as a protein block, TRP is a biochemical precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin and neurohormone melatonin. In addition, the human body is capable of synthesizing niacin from TRP. Serotonin plays an important role in controlling mood and impulses.
