Also known as Sladnik, the licorice root is extracted from the underground stems of the perennial plant Glycyrrhiza glabra grown in Greece, Turkey and Asia. It is called so because of the ingredient glycyrrhiza, due to its characteristic sweet taste. In fact, licorice is 50 times as sweet as sugar and has been used as a flavor for making various confectionery, food and beverages. Today, an anion plays a similar role, although the liquor is still used as a flavoring in herbal medicines, cough and throat candies, and tobacco products.
The root of the bile is used long ago in ancient Greece, China and Egypt because it helps to relieve stomach ulcers. Today, the herb is highly valued because of the many health-conscious active ingredients it contains, including flavonoids, phytoestrogens and the glycyrrhiza (or glycyrrhizic acid) compound. It is believed that the chemicals in Sladnika help solve digestive problems. They also support liver health and help relieve sore throat and dry cough. Due to the effect the herb has on the adrenal gland, it is often used in chronic fatigue conditions.
Nowadays, the Lemon Root is a widespread dietary supplement, available in various forms, from tinctures to suckers and teas.
What is the Swanson root licorice supplement recommended for?
The root of the herb has long been used in Chinese folk medicine because it is believed to promote longevity. Today, scientific research shows that it also has other health benefits, including:
Symptomatic relief of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: The female lichen root stimulates the production of cortisol from the adrenal gland;
Cold and flu: contributes to increasing levels of interferon - a substance produced by the immune system that fights the viral cells. The herb is able to help relieve cough and sore throats;
Reduces inflammation and affects favorably the health of the liver;
Digestive tonic: Helps in the health of the intestine and reduces inflammation of the digestive tract;
In menstrual problems: there is an effect similar to that of estrogen in the female organism. When the hormone levels are high (before menstruation), the herb reduces its effect, and when its levels are low (during menopause), it acts as a substitute for it.
